Icky Sticky Bubble gum!

 

Rationale: This lesson will teach children about the correspondence i=/i/.  Students will learn to recognize, spell, and read words containing i=/i/.  They will learn a meaningful representation (when you have something sticky or icky on your hand, you wipe it off because it is nasty), they will spell and read words in a letterbox lesson, and read a decodable book that focuses on the correspondence i=/i/.

 

Materials:

  1. Image of a person dealing with sticky bubble gum

  2. Cover-up Critter

  3. Letterboxes (for modeling and for student)

  4. Letter manipulates (magnetic letters for teacher and small regular manipulates for student)

  5. List of spelling words on a poster

  6. Magnetic board for the teacher

  7. Decodable text: Pig in a Bag (computer or device for reading the book)

  8. Assessment worksheet

  9. Letters needed for the lesson: p, i, g, l, h, t, c, k, d, r, n, s, a, e.

 

Procedures:

  1. Say: In order to become expert readers, we must learn the code that helps us pronounce words.  We have already learned to read words like hat, lap, wet, and set.  These words consist of either a=/a/ or e=/e/, but today we are going to learn to read words with icky sticky i=/i/.  When I say i=/i/, I tend to think about sticky bubble gum. (show the students the image of sticky bubble gum). 

  2. Say: Before we can read words, we need to be able to recognize what they sound like.  Let’s see if you can find the icky sticky sound in this tongue tickler.  “Vicky tricked her sister into licking the sticky skittles.”  Now let’s slow things down and every time you hear the icky “i” sound, I want you to shake your hands like this (perform motion) and pretend to get that icky sticky “i” off.  “V-i-i-i-cky tr-i-i-i-cked her s-i-i-i-ster i-i-i-nto l-i-i-i-cking the st-i-i-i-cky sk-i-i-i-ttles.” Can you hear how your mouth opens slightly and your tongue goes to the bottom of your mouth?

  3. Say: Now I am going to read you some words.  Let’s see if you listen for the icky sticky “i.”  Do you hear the i=/i/ in Sip or Sat? Witch or water? Fight or fall?

  4. Say: Now that we can recognize the sound i=/i/, let’s practice spelling it.  Let’s start with the word pig.  P-i-g (sound out these letters).  I can hear three different sounds when I say the word pig, so I know that I am going to need three letterboxes.  P-i-g (sound out these letters).  I hear the icky sticky i=/i/ in the middle (place the letter i in the middle box).  Now I go back to the beginning with my p-p-p sound (put the letter p in the first box), and now all I have left is the g-g-g “g” on the end (put the letter g in the third box).  Well here I officially have the word p-i-g! Let’s see if you can practice some words with the icky sticky “i.” (lap, pet, lip, hit, lick, drink, stink, mip – Scaffold as needed).

  5. Say: You’re doing so good! Let’s practice reading some words with icky sticky “i” in them (get out poster with words on them).  If I was going to read the word sip, I would begin by locating my icky sticky “i” and then I would look at the letters before it.  I see that the “s” before the icky sticky “i” says s-s-s.  So, putting this together makes s-s-i-i and now we add the final letter “p” p-p-p.  Finally, I will put it all together s-s-i-i-p-p, sip!!  Let’s see if you can practice reading some words (same as letterbox lesson, but have words printed out).

  6. Say: What an awesome job you’ve been doing!  Now that we can recognize the icky sticky “i” it’s time to hear it in a story!  We’re going to read a book called Pig in a Bag.  Tim is having his birthday party and Ben gives him a pig as his present.  The pig plays with Tim’s dog until suddenly he begins to run away!  We’re going to have to read the rest of the book to find out if Tim ever gets his pet pig back!  -- (have the student read the book and scaffold when needed).

  7. Say: We have one last activity to do.  I want you to complete this worksheet by reading each word.  You are going to match the word with the picture it belongs with.  Color the pictures once you have matched them all
